Gifted photographers from across the country picked up honours at EEF’s National Manufacturing Photography Awards hosted on 20th November in Westminster.
The competition, which is sponsored by Liberty House Group and in partnership with the GREAT Campaign is now in its 9th year and seeks creative images that capture the essence of modern manufacturing. Photographs can portray any stage of manufacturing – from design, process and technology in action through to the finished product – and can cover traditional or high-tech sectors. Winners were split into the categories of young, amateur and professional photographers.
Stephen Phipson, CEO at EEF, said: “From investing in the future by providing high-quality apprenticeships to exporting world class products across the globe, manufacturing is the perfect illustration of British ingenuity and creativity. All of the talented photographers shortlisted this year are to be congratulated on their incredible images that brilliantly reflect the innovation and dynamism of our sector.”
A spokesperson from Liberty commented: “The UK manufacturing sector is diverse, delivering many world leading products, services and technologies. The EEF Manufacturing Photography competition provides a vast array of opportunities to capture images that celebrate our industry and inspire a new generation of engineering and manufacturing professionals among young people. Liberty via the GFG Foundation is already working towards the revival of engineering skills in the United Kingdom and we hope this competition would give young people a further opportunity to get involved and choose manufacturing as their future career.”
The manufacturing photography competition will run again in 2019. Details will be announced next year.
Next Generation Category

CREDIT: Welding Shower, taken by Andy Newman at Griffon Hoverworks in Southampton. Winner in the Amateur Next Generation category of the EEF Photography Competition 2018. CAPTION: As part of the Griffon Hoverworks apprentice training scheme each person has to complete an overhead weld. This weld procedure is carried out on two pieces of plate and the weld is checked on site and also then sent off to Lloyds for testing. Once approved the person or apprentice is then qualified to weld on a hovercraft that will be registered with Lloyds. The initial weld often showers the person in sparks and hence PPE is essential.

Future Technology Category
CREDIT: New Dawn, taken by Siobhan Lock at Margam Green Energy Plant in Port Talbot. Winner in the Young Future Technology category of the EEF Photography Competition 2018. CAPTION: Margam Green Energy is an innovative green energy biomass plant which utilises recycled woodchip material. Within the main building a complex network of ducts pass around the outside of the boiler which produces enough energy to superheat the water creating steam at 1000oC. This image looks up into the new dawn of sustainable electricity manufacturing.
CREDIT: Voortman V808, taken by Niek Braam at Leach Structural Steelwork in Preston UK. Winner in the Amateur Future Technology category of the EEF Photography Competition 2018. CAPTION: Leach Structural Steelwork is dedicated to delivering a professional service offering value engineering on projects delivered. Their recent investment of a fully automated beam processing line by Voortman accentuates their constant growth. Within this processing line, the 8-axis Voortman V808 robotic thermal cutting machine can process any complex profiles and copes needed and therefore provides enormous freedom to design and produce more complex steel structures. The cutting robot is equipped with High Definition Plasma, for a fast cutting process with high quality results.

CAPTION: High volume automated robotic store for managing millions of biological samples at pharmaceutical companies, research institutes and biobanks.
Manufacturing Process Category
CREDIT: Water Being Poured For Brewing, taken by Joshua Miles Sedgley at Joule's Brewery in Drayton. Winner in the Young Manufacturing Process category of the EEF Photography Competition 2018. CAPTION: Joule's is a small brewery serving it's own collection of 40 brewery taps. Joule's produces around 7,000 barrels a year; just over 2 million pints. Their flagship seasonal cold beer is brewed to German purity laws of 'Reinheitsgrebot' and 300,000 pints of it are sold annually. It takes 3 weeks to mature and condition. Other Joule's beers include Joule's Pale Ale, Slumbering Monk and Pure Blonde. Last year's cold beer, Indian Pale, has hints of fruit and spice.
CAPTION: At Griffon Hoverworks each component is hand made. This is a simple cooling duct off a 995 hovercraft currently being manufactured in the facility. Jake is using a TIG welder to complete the weld and get the component ready to be installed on the craft.
CREDIT: Not Painting by Numbers!, taken by Adrian Waine at Severfield plc in Yorkshire. Commissioned by DuPont Personal Protection. Winner in the Professional Manufacturing Process category of the EEF Photography Competition 2018. CAPTION: Severfield plc is the largest structural steel specialist in the UK. Each week its Dalton site in North Yorkshire processes up to 1,000 tonnes of steel, all bound for projects across the United Kingdom. Among the many iconic buildings reliant on Severfield steel are The Shard, The Excel exhibition centre and Wimbledon's centre court. When painters at the site wanted a protective coverall that was lightweight and would allow them to work comfortably throughout their 10-hour shifts they turned to DuPont Protection Solutions. This photograph illustrates the painting process whereby the painter is protected by a Tyvek suit created by DuPont Personal Protection.
Manufacturing Product Category
CREDIT: Suspension of Time, taken by Siobhan Lock at Paulin Watches in Glasgow. Winner in the Young Manufacturing Product category of the EEF Photography Competition 2018. CAPTION: Paulin Watches, set up in 2013, adds flair to everyday products such as timepieces. Last year the sisters extended their repertoire to include wall clocks. Their new clock features a bespoke typeface and draws influence from Bauhaus and Art Deco principles. Their product emphasises practical design with a legible and elegant face coupled with a silent, sweeping second hand allowing it to be simultaneously omnipresent and minimally invasive.
CREDIT: Jacking Pipe, taken by Steve McLellan at Naylor Drainage Ltd, Cawthorne in Barnsley. Winner in the Amateur Manufacturing Product category of the EEF Photography Competition 2018. CAPTION: Jacking Pipe: Naylor Drainage Cawthorne Yorkshire. Finished production awaiting shipment to all points of the Globe. Naylor Clayware "Jacking Pipe" is so strong that a machine can push it through the ground beneath a road saving the disruption of closing the road to dig an open trench. This requires a flawless pipe and saves the City and the Civil Engineer both time and money in installation of sewer systems or water management systems. Made by the Naylor Family for 4 generations in Yorkshire, these pipes have been deployed all parts of the World often being preferred to more locally made pipes because of their quality and longevity.
CAPTION: Containment Isolator manufactured by Huddersfield Engineering Company Extract Technology who use innovation to protect operators and cross contamination of materials. Extract Technology provides a comprehensive range of containment solutions that operate under negative pressure HEPA filtered air to protect the operator from exposure to potent materials. Products manufactured are mainly used within the Pharmaceutical Industry.
Following the release of its new line of products for industrial automation at Automate 2023, global engineering technologies company Renishaw has announced the addition of its RCS product series to the Renishaw Channel Partner Programme. The international programme aims to continually enhance levels of local customer service and product support.
MTL Advanced, one of the UK’s largest metal fabrication and contract manufacturing companies and part of the WEC Group, has introduced a brand-new LVD Taurus 12kW XXL format fibre laser to its large profiling line-up, following a substantial £1m investment.
The latest Contract Manufacturing Index shows that the UK market for subcontract manufacturing continued to grow in the first quarter. The index was up 4.5% in the first three months of 2024, building on the strong upswing at the end of 2023.
